'mackarel sky' on the way to work...called my mom when i saw it in the east and told her to go outside and look...she told me it was called a mackarel sky because it resembles the markings on an adult king mackarel fish...she also told me she remembers her dad saying "mackarel in the sky, three days dry"...it occurs between 8-20K ft and can lead to dry or wet weather depending on moist air moving into that layer of clouds or not.
